MainSteam Model Live Steam Boats

Work

I arrived in 1953, and have been building and playing with model steam engines, boats & model aircraft since I was a kid, but work often gets in the way! My working life started as a professional musician (Keyboards - but I'm alright now!) Also at this time I was into Hammond Tonewheel Organs & spent a few years both repairing & rebuilding them commercially. (see "Keith's Pages" on www.academystudio.co.uk ) I opened my recording studio (Academy Music Studio) in 1984, which is still running today. I have worked with many well known people, both on stage & in the studio over the years. Now though, I am also a freelance computer engineer, network installations, system maintenance etc etc. Although increasingly, I am busy building steam models & accessories.

I enjoy building & flying scale & sport type radio controlled model aircraft. I have also built quite a few 5 inch & 7 1/4 inch gauge steam locomotives, steam engines, steam boats and various other models over the years & currently have a 7 1/4 inch gauge miniature railway (which is about 400 feet long) around my house, on which I run the tank engine that I have. Some of the curves are a little tight, so 0 - 4 - 0 tank engines are the best type to run on my track.

The model boats that I enjoy building are Victorian style open steam launches, because it seems a pity to hide a classy steam engine inside a superstructure, where you can't see the engine running or monitor the water level & steam pressure when sailing.

Working on the steamboats using mahogany is an interesting experience, & getting the steam plants running "just right" is what I always enjoy, which means that when I sail them, I get the absolute minimum of technical problems. My steam launches usually have a working steam powered "Weir" type boiler feed pump, steam whistle & working lights installed.

This obsessive hobby is now a small business as of April 2007, selling top quality live steam items worldwide.

My business is based in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
