Welcome to my lovely shiny little world of tightlacing!

Our mascot Kizzy, the most pampered puss in Powys!

Welcome to my lovely shiny little world of tightlacing! Hi there and thanks for checking us out! Desert Orchid Designs are a small, intimate company producing made to measure corsetry, costume and more in our gourgeous little mid wales workshop! We have the pleasure of working at the inspirational Thomas shop (http://www.thomas-shop.co.uk) Who provide a wealth of traditional craft workshops, tuition, a museum and play host to a range of enterprising young businesses including Tonic shirts (an organic, fair trade and funky clothing company!), A recycled glass project providing workplace training in the locality, An amazing woman who spins and weaves rare welsh breed wool, and The fabulous Brenda Bullock of Raw photos, who has taken the studio shots you see in our listings!. We welcome visitors for a browse (but you'll have to excuse the mess if its a cutting out day!) so if you find yourself in the area do pop in! A little about what we do... We recognise that on ebay there are a lot of "corsets" for sale that are flimsy, use plastic boning, and are lovely as a top to wear out but will do nothing for your waist! well the good news is that we're not one of those companies! (apart from anything else almost all our corsets are made to measure!) So what makes us different? Everything we make has 4 sturdy layers, this will consist of 2 centre layers of a corsetry canvas to prevent stretch and provide great support that smooths down those lumps that can appear when tightlacing, a strong but soft drill lining for longevity of the garment, and your choice of fashion fabric on the outside. Go nuts! silks, brocades, velvets, funky patterned cottons and Alexander Henry prints (yes, we love him as much as you do!) there are practically no limits. ALL our boning is steel. We use rust-proof stainless steel flexible wires over the majority of the corset to give you flawless curves, with flat steels at the front and back openings to provide the necessary support (and help flatten tummies!) This is the traditional way of doing it and if its good enough for the wasp waisted victorians then its good enough for us! Our eyelets are also rust-proof, and are actually grommets, which have washers on the back for longer life. We lace these up with proper steel tipped corsetry lacing for a slip free fit. We pride ourselves on being honest, friendly sellers and working very hard to give our customers their perfect garment, So if there is a GENUINE problem with your purchase we will always refund if it turns out that we are at fault. Please, no unpicked stitches, we know our own work! If you are unsure about your puchase then just drop us a line, we love to discuss your ideas and if we can help put your mind at rest then so much the better! We are pleased to announce that we cater for the extremes of size, not just the size 10-18 range, The smallest corset we have done so far is a teeny 18" waist, and we can go up to a 50" at present, 60" in mens. Our cup sizes range from A-G and on occassion we have created new cup sizes for those really well endowed ladies! So do ask if youre wondering! POSTAGE AND PACKAGING We are very concerned about the environmental impact that mail order business has with its disposable packaging etc, so all our sales go to you in the packaging we recieve our orders in! We also recieve donations of jiffy bags from local businesses to keep up the demand. We mention this so you arent offended if your purchase turns up in a scruffy envelope, it will always be securely packaged! Corset courses We are now offering the oppurtunity to make your own corsets with us! In our ebay shop you may have noticed a classified ad for our corsetry courses, and were pleased to say weve had a great response so far, and have expanded the range of courses we offer to suit the varyng needs of our students, you can now choose from 1, 2 or 3 day one on one courses, each planned around your personal experience and goals, so even if you consider yourself an intermediate we can still find something to focus on! get in touch at ceridwen87@aol.com to talk about what youre looking for!

SOME TIPS ON RESPONSIBLE TIGHTLACING Now the victorian ladies of yore would have been waist training from the age of 7 and had an average waist size of 13.5". To put that in perspective, a UK size 8 is a waist size of 24", and I think the recent world record was 16.5" in a corset! They wore their corsets day and night and even during pregnancy which caused them many health problems and often resulted in death during childbirth. We've got a bit more sense now, mostly because corsets are a lifestyle choice, not a social necessity, But those who still choose to take their waist training seriously (and we salute you!) must consider the health risks and take care of themselves properly. Your body will tell you when youve gone too far! If it hurts then thats usually a good sign to stop. A safe amount of reduction for most people is 2-4" depending on your natural waist size, and how "squishy" your waist is! We've all seen our heroes like Mr Pearl and Dita Von teese with their dainty waists but this is a very inidividual thing, and we really reccomend speaking to your doctor if you wish to go extreme with your reduction! listen to what they say and take it on board, because your health is too precious to risk for beauty! The same goes to our clients with back problems, please consult your GP about the suitability of a corset with your current treatment as our corsets are NOT medical items! Sorry but it had to be said....you can go back and enjoy being a laced up diva now!

Proper care of your corset

If you have just purchased a corset from us then we have a few basic tips to keep your garment in tip top shape for even longer! - Always loosen the laces at the back before removing or putting on your corset. Failure to do so may damage the front busk and the flat steel bones. -DO NOT wash your corset!! this removes the stiffening treatment on the canvas used in the centre, and your garment will never be the same! If necessary for small stains, spot clean gently with a damp cloth, If you really must then dry cleaning will be suitable, but to keep your corset fresh, air it out over a chair at night, and use febreeze liberally! :) The cotton drill lining will help to keep problems at a miniumum. -We reccomend that you dont let others wear your corset. You will probably notice that after a while your corset has moulded to your shape, this is what makes it comfortable! if you have a particularly small waist then this may also cause undue stress to the bones at the centre! (also if they look better in it than you do you'll never forgive them!) -Dont forget that when planning a second purchase you can use your first piece to help you improve the fit! Think about whether youd like an extra inch over the hips, or whether you would need a little more support on the sides with an extra bone or two.
