NOTICE TO COLLECTORS

March
7, 2008 |
For the next 8
months, I will be attending to a health
problem. Though my prognosis is
excellent, I've been told that I will
not have my usual stamina.
Since painting has
always been a high-energy exercise for
me, I will not be able to produce as
many paintings as I normally do for
internet and eBay sales, but I intend to
auction at least one painting per week.
Please understand
that this is only temporary and my
dedication to sharing the wonders of
light and color is undiminished.

Eight Compelling
Reasons to Buy Art
Directly from eBay
Artists
Buying art online can be exciting and
rewarding, but even experienced buyers
are subject to being misled and have
ended up with fraudulent works or
sub-standard pieces. There are ways to
protect yourself from these problems
(See “Ten Tips for Buying Great Art
Online”), but probably the surest method
is to buy directly from the artist. Ask
yourself these questions:
1. Who is most qualified to
attest to the authenticity of an
artwork? Of course, it’s the artist. You
may be tempted by famous artists’ names
in auction titles, but these are rarely
what they seem to be. Usually, work
directly from the artist’s studio has
been unavailable to others, and the
possibility of counterfeiting is remote,
especially if it is a newly introduced
work. If experienced collectors cannot
be sure that their piece is really by
Monet unless authenticated by an
accredited source, then new collectors
are even more vulnerable. Until you are
fully informed, stick to pieces whose
authenticity is more certain… those sold
by the artist himself.
-
Why risk buying
from an online source whose
commitment and guarantee are
doubtful? Will you be stuck with a
substandard artwork or one you just
don’t like? Even the best effort at
reproducing the color or detail on a
computer screen can be skewed by
factors beyond the control of the
web site or the viewer. Many artists
selling online and on eBay are fully
aware of this trap and offer a 100%
money back guarantee. Artists
consider this a necessity and it is
the only way you should agree to a
purchase.
-
Will you get the
service you deserve? Other customer
relations problems can be
encountered with a seller who
handles mass purchases, like using
packaging not designed especially
for artwork, and other shipping and
insurance catastrophes. When you
deal with the artist himself, these
are minimized because, not only is
he more practiced at shipping art,
but he is more committed to the
prospect that you may become not
just a buyer, but a repeat buyer and
collector.
-
Why must you use,
or lose money on, gallery framing?
Most artists, especially those
selling on eBay, offer unframed
work. This is to your advantage
since you can choose framing in line
with your own taste and décor. The
standard “gallery gold” or
minimalist frame might actually
detract from the work when it is
hung in your surroundings.
-
Must you pay
gallery or retail prices, when
artists are often willing to sell
for less, especially if they do not
have framing or the high commissions
involved? Almost all of the artwork
offered by artists on eBay sells for
½ to 1/3 of the gallery retail.
-
Don’t you want
the artist’s most recent work since
it reflects the greatest degree of
knowledge and achievement by that
artist? Artworks in galleries have
often hung for months or years…or
been stored in a back room to be
brought out for a second or third
showing on a rotating basis. Each
artist grows with each work produced
and pieces that are “fresh off the
easel” reflect that growth. Work on
eBay, especially, sells at such a
rate that the artist is forced to
put his newest and best pieces on
sale. Oftentimes, he realizes only
later that he has auctioned an
exceptional piece. (I’ve let many
“get away” that should have been
reserved for exhibitions.)
-
Do you want to
buy an artwork, only to realize
later that it was not a professional
working artist who produced it, but
it is from an art factory halfway
around the world? These pieces have
flooded the market and are sold to
internet sellers by the score.
Often, such sources mistake me for a
reseller and approach me to purchase
“original paintings” for as little
as $5 per canvas. What a sleazy
operation! I wonder where they get
their “tree brushes” and their
“cloud stamps.” EBay sellers who
identify themselves as the artists
will have none of this!
-
Wouldn’t you like
to be able to communicate with the
artist directly and establish a
relationship with him? Often, such
communication must go through the
gallery or non-artist seller. You
never know what is the real source
of the information or whether it has
been filtered by someone with other
motives. Artists, however, relish
direct exchanges with their buyers
and welcome them. It is this close
communication and feedback that is
most fulfilling for the artist and
lets him feel and respond to the
pulse of his market.
Whether you have a substantial art
collection or are a “newbie,” you should
watch for work offered directly from
artists selling online and on eBay and
claim all the benefits mentioned. The
results are certain, the risk is
minimized, and the rewards can be
life-long. Enjoy!
