The music industry is increasingly concerned with extra-musical considerations, of the cult of celebrity, the links to cinema, and with the integration of the sonic arts into a wider culture of fashion and marketing.
Now more than ever, 'serious' music is an impossibility, and yet there are more professional composers now than ever before in the history of music.
And so a new mechanism is required - a re-definition of the audience, from an abstract group to specific individuals.
My mission here is twofold: firstly to sell you CDs. That's how you came to me in the ebay search and that's what you want from me. Secondly though my mission is to communicate the music that I make, not by setting up a website and waiting for people to turn up; not by writing scores and hoping that a publisher will publish them and then that ensembles will perform them; not by sending out demos to record companies hoping that I can tailor my music to their agenda or that their agenda will by chance match my own and continue to match my own as one or the other changes..... no, there is another channel open: you are in it.
If you're buying a CD from me then I know what your tastes are. Therefore when I write for you I know something of what you already like. Every package sent out contains a free CD of my own music, and my mission is to match it to what I know of your tastes. I draw from my catalogue of albums finished to date, and recombine the tracks in new configurations - what you receive is a one-off, and the title is drawn up to reflect your interests.
This is the new and logical model of distribution for music (or certainly for my music) in the 21st century - rather than complaining at the fragmentation of "the audience" and the dominance of imposed tastes on the general public, it makes more sense to revel in the opportunity that cultural atomisation brings: to make something specific to one listener and to their network of friends, to side-step the industry and speak to those people who are interested in what remains of interest, not try to "compete" with the extra-musical musical orthodoxy which really services the needs of people not especially interested in music. That's not such a bad thing: music has become two arts, one of which is focused on the sonic aspect, the other focused on the integration of sound into other areas of interest.
The cost of these free CDs is minimal and I do not pass it on to the buyers of the eBay CDs: my P&P rates are the market average: usually .50 for a CD (see individual listings). In the 21st century the means of producing a CD are so universally available and so inexpensive that finally music is able to enjoy the clear function of *communication*, one person to another.
