John Wright Art Gallery presents art works by John Wright. From gardens, landscapes and beach scenes to fantastic flights of the imagination, my art is inspired by all I see and experience.
I have always liked to draw and paint, but didn't take it up seriously until I was in my early 30's. I attended a local evening class and was very lucky to find a very good and patient teacher. I joined a couple of local art groups and gradually developed my style and interests.
In my work I paint landscapes and seascapes in pastels, acrylics and watercolour. Through the medium of my art, I try to express the particular mood or feeling that these subjects evoke. I have a love of coastal areas particularly the Suffolk coast and I enjoy the challenge of capturing the light and atmosphere of that part of the country. I work mostly from sketches and photographs but I also like to paint in the landscape itself.
I am constantly revising and looking at fresh approaches to the way I work.
At the moment I paint in my spare time, but I hope one day to be able to work at my art full time. Presenting and selling my work online is part of this plan. It gives me a chance to show my work to a wide audience, who hopefully will like it enough to buy it. (By the way, a big thank you to all those who have bought my work so far. It is very encouraging to me when I sell a piece of work.)
If you would like to contact me to ask me about any aspect of my work please feel free to do so at feather_wright@hotmail.com. You may also view my work at my personal website.
My artwork is inspired by realistic subjects which I then abstract or stylise. I particularly enjoy using buildings and plants. I may use photos or my drawings-often computer drawn ones- as a basis, but will then change the colours and add details from imagination or memory, or simply just use the latter to construct a picture.
I love taking a quick glance at a scene and simplifying what is in reality very complicated, often by placing a mental ramearound it skill etched on my memory from City and Guilds Embroidery courses. I also enjoy making fantasy artwork, again from my imagination or what is my idea of characters from myth, legend and stories.
I work mainly in watercolour-paint and pencil, felt and gel pens, coloured pencils, inks. I sometimes add texture in the form of a magazine cutting, or other papers or threads/fabric etc.
My cats enjoy my art and will help by drinking excess paint flavoured water, sitting on a painting to keep it warm, and grabbing my hand or brush to just make a mark where they see fit. I don think anyone buying my work would want a subtle cat-hair texture however, so I carefully remove this before offering it for sale!
I would like people to enjoy my art in the sense of seeing a different way of viewing things, and experiencing hopefully the atmosphere and mood that I trying to convey.
