About the artist
Born in Hampshire, after completing his education, in which art did not feature a great deal, he entered the banking profession. During this time he became an accomplished dinghy sailor later becoming both the National and Inland Champion, experiences that would later stand him in good stead for his favourite artistic subject the sea. After a career in banking, he then spent some time working in the charitable sector.
Following his "retirement" from competitive sailing, he devoted himself to learning to paint. Self taught, and unencumbered by the strictures of a formal art education, he is driven by his love of the sea, which is reflected in his acclaimed maritime work. His love of the beautiful English countryside inspires his evocative landscapes. This has resulted in excess of a hundred and eighty paintings and commissions already being sold both throughout the UK, Europe, Canada, and USA.
He has participated in a number of group exhibitions with his second one man show in the summer of 2005. Having recently given up full time employment to pursue his art, he works mostly in watercolour, and also in acrylic. He favours maritime and coastal scenes, but also produces outstanding landscapes. He says that watercolour is a challenging medium, but when it all comes together, can produce a seascape in which you can almost taste the salt spray.
Artist's Statement
I like to convey the majesty of the sea and sail in my marine paintings, and try to capture the beauty of nature and a sense of the open air in my landscapes. I do not yet feel that I have achieved the ultimate in representing these two subjects, but that is part of the challenge that keeps me striving as an artist. As I endeavour to portray that magic something that transports the viewer into another place, perhaps evoking memories of days gone by, I hope my work inspires and uplifts you, if it achieves that then I am well pleased.
I have recently started painting very small miniatures 2.5"x 3.5", ACEO's ( Art Cards Editions & Originals) which are a new venture for me, these are becoming highly prized amongst collectors of this type of art which are an extremely affordable way of building your own miniature art collection. At a recent exhibition in Chicago half of my miniatures immediately sold.
