Once upon a time long
long ago in the early 70 there was a boy who fell in love with music.
Each week he spend his pocket money on a 7 inch single, (remember
those?) during the school holidays he do odd jobs for people to earn a
little extra money so that he could afford two or maybe three singles
and possibly even an LP. He thought when he grew up that he like to
become a DJ or own his own record shop.
At secondary school he became friends
with a boy whose parents owned a nightclub; although strictly speaking
at 14-15 too young to be in there when it was open, he was allowed to
spin records during the first couple of hours before the main DJ, this
could be the start of something big he thought.
On leaving school at 16 he got a job
working for a big electrical retailer, he enjoyed it most of the time
although his heart was still set on being in the music business one day,
he now had more money than he could ever imagine to buy new records
which kept him happy. Over the next couple of years at night he became
the main DJ at that night club, it was hard work working five days and
three nights but he loved it. But sadly like all good things it came to
an end and in the closing weeks of 1983 the club was closed, sold and
knocked down to be replaced by a petrol station.
From working day and night, enjoying
himself doing what he loved at night and with more money than common
sense it was a bit of a let down to be just doing his normal day job,
the nights where never quite the same again. Maybe it just wasn meant
to be, so he carried on working for the same company taking different
jobs within it for many more years.
In 2000 a friend mentioned that there
was allsorts of rare and hard to find goodies for music collectors on
the internet on a place called eBay. He heard a bit about the site
before but never really looked closely at it. However, after a while he
made his first purchase, a bit hesitant as he couldn really believe
how this weird site worked. Complete strangers advertise things and you
send them electronic money for it and in a few days it magically arrives
in the post, and sure enough it did. From there on he was hooked and
over the next few years made many purchases. After all those years of
collecting he found that there was many items he no longer wanted so
decided to have a go at selling them on eBay around 2003/4 and found it
enjoyable.
During Christmas 2004 at his normal job
after working hard for many weeks with little recognition or thanks for
all his hard work over yet another Christmas he decided that at the
wrong side of 40 enough was enough and it was time to quit. He searched
and made many enquires for sourcing CDs to make a go of selling on eBay
his main job. After getting plans into place on January 7th 2005 he
handed in his notice after 25 years loyal service. This was it, there
was no turning back, it was either sink or swim.
It may be over a quarter of a
century late, and wee come via a roundabout route, but finally here is
that boy all grown up now with his own music shop, not quite how I
envisaged things all those years ago before the internet existed, but
finally we have agnum Opus |
