For Dazed & Confused’s anniversary issue, we asked our family of fashion collaborators – designers, stylists and make-up artists – to select one personal memento that sums up the last two decades for them, and send it in to become part of our “time capsule”. The result is a unique visual memoir and tribute to the last 20 years in fashion. Now, Dazed are giving the world the chance to own a little piece of fashion history in an auction of the entire collection. All proceeds go to Oxfam.

Rankin’s 3D resin rendition of
his wife, Tuuli
“The object is a 3D rendition of my wife, Tuuli. It was made by a process that involved scanning her and transferring the scan to a computer. The image was then put through a series of specialised programs, then output through a 3D printer which uses photo-curing resin. The resin is built up in layers and each layer is cured by a flash of UV light before the next layer is laid down. In a lot of ways, this technology is the future of photography, and imaging in general. It appears to be a very simple object, but it represents huge technological advances. My hope is that my choice to include this rendition of Tuuli will provide a glimpse into the way I feel about the invention of the camera obscura.”

Michael Clark and the members of his dance company were shot for the third issue of AnOther Magazine by Nick Knight, styled by Katy England and Sofia De Romarate. “In 2009, I co-directed a short film ‘You Can’t Pretend To Be Somebody Else – You Already Are’ with artist Lars Laumann. It started in Ibiza as an attempt to reconstruct the tragic bicycle ride that led to the Warhol superstar Nico’s death 20 years earlier. Two musicians were commissioned to make tracks inspired by Nico’s music. Dan-Ola Persson’s track is full of dark drones and feedback while Liam Byrne made a serene track performed entirely on a viola da gamba. As this was work made in relation to another 20th anniversary, it seemed right to give it to celebrate another 20 years...”

“The ability to make fire has always been a sign of human ingenuity. In Greek mythology, fire is what the intelligent Prometheus stole from Zeus and gave to mortals. This lighter, covered in white Swarovski crystals and bearing the Versace Medusa-head motif in gold – a reference to another Greek myth – is a portable fire-maker and that is why I have chosen it for the time capsule. It’s both useful and symbolic of the human spirit.”

I commissioned the amazing Alex Brownsell to dye this blue wig for Mia Wasikowska, the star of ‘Alice in Wonderland’, to wear on the March 2010 cover. I’ve since worn the wig to a Dazed Christmas party when I went dressed as the Virgin Mary. I know I’m not the first to have dyed my hair but it makes me happy.”

“Happy anniversary, Dazed & Confused. I have chosen this bag for Dazed’s time capsule to raise awareness about the Ethical Africa Programme. Simone Cipriani, head of the International Trade Centre for Poor Communities and Trade, came to me with this idea to use fashion as a means to get out of poverty. This project gives people control over their lives, it makes them independent. It’s quite incredible to think that one day we might be able to save the world through fashion.”
