eBay Time Capsule Charity Auction - Daze

For Dazed & Confused’s anniversary issue, we asked our family of fashion collaborators – designers, stylists and make-up artists – to select one personal memento that sums up the last two decades for them, and send it in to become part of our “time capsule”. The result is a unique visual memoir and tribute to the last 20 years in fashion. Now, Dazed are giving the world the chance to own a little piece of fashion history in an auction of the entire collection. All proceeds go to Oxfam.

Charity eBay auction from 20th November - 27th November

Rankin’s 3D resin rendition of
his wife, Tuuli

“The object is a 3D rendition of my wife, Tuuli. It was made by a process that involved scanning her and transferring the scan to a computer. The image was then put through a series of specialised programs, then output through a 3D printer which uses photo-curing resin. The resin is built up in layers and each layer is cured by a flash of UV light before the next layer is laid down. In a lot of ways, this technology is the future of photography, and imaging in general. It appears to be a very simple object, but it represents huge technological advances. My hope is that my choice to include this rendition of Tuuli will provide a glimpse into the way I feel about the invention of the camera obscura.” View Item

Eugene Souleiman’s headpiece

“This piece is the first prototype for the New York Ballet, called ‘Ocean Kingdom’. It is for my favourite section – the ‘Terra Punks’. I loved the idea because when I was young, I was a punk. The attitude still holds true for me... It is something I hold dear to both my heart and my past.” View Item

Alister Mackie’s shirt and belt

“The shirt was made for Bobby Gillespie to wear for the cover shoot of Dazed, shot by Martina Hoogland Ivanow. Since then the shirt has had a life of its own – Bobby and I have both worn it to Primal Scream gigs. It was customised with ribbons from naval hats.” View Item

Karen Langley’s Natacha
Marro shoes

“These Natacha Marro shoes are a memento from the first shoot I ever assisted on. Michael Clark and the members of his dance company were shot for the third issue of AnOther Magazine by Nick Knight, styled by Katy England and Sofia De Romarate. I felt so privileged to be involved in the shoot, as I do now about being a part of the Dazed family.” View Item

Tabitha Simmons’ shoes

“Dazed & Confused gave me so much artistic freedom. When I first started at the magazine, I didn’t have a styling career or a shoe line and now that I do, I realise that it’s all Jefferson’s fault!” View Item

Maison Martin Margiela’s
miniature jacket

“The original of this jacket was presented as part of the Summer 1989 collection, and was then re-designed as a miniature version for the Summer 2009 collection to celebrate the Maison’s 20th anniversary. This iconic piece from the Maison’s archive is the perfect celebration piece to include in the Dazed & Confused 20th anniversary time capsule. Thank you for your continued support towards the Maison.” View Item

Viktor and Rolf’s miniature
doll

“For this very monumental issue of Dazed & Confused, we chose an equally monumental yet miniature doll from one of our precious collections. She was inspired by our very first haute couture collection, ‘Atomic Bomb’ in 1998, and expresses our surreal contrasts – she’s at once explosive and glamorous. She’s a capsule of our Viktor & Rolf universe, who we know will live on in the Dazed universe.” View Item

Benjamin Alexander Huseby’s
7” vinyl

“In 2009, I co-directed a short film ‘You Can’t Pretend To Be Somebody Else – You Already Are’ with artist Lars Laumann. It started in Ibiza as an attempt to reconstruct the tragic bicycle ride that led to the Warhol superstar Nico’s death 20 years earlier. Two musicians were commissioned to make tracks inspired by Nico’s music. Dan-Ola Persson’s track is full of dark drones and feedback while Liam Byrne made a serene track performed entirely on a viola da gamba. As this was work made in relation to another 20th anniversary, it seemed right to give it to celebrate another 20 years...” View Item

Rick Owens’ fashion
show soundtrack

“I can think of few ways to mark time more intimately and emotionally than music. Although the music selections for these shows were never actually of the moment, the choice to use them at that moment was of the moment... At least my perception of the moment.” View Item

Stephen Jones’s signed book

“In a thousand years time, people will wonder why in the late 20th and early 21st century people stopped decorating their heads, as it is such a primary act of being. This book describes one of those who believed that personal appearance was self-expression and it should not stop at your neck!” View Item

Gary Card’s sculpture

“Dazed, masking tape and me go back a long way. In fact, the first thing I ever made for Dazed was with the stuff so it seemed appropriate to return to the material for the anniversary. What could be more fitting for a time capsule than a suffocating man gasping for air for eternity? I loved the idea of him glowing underground forever with no one to see him.” View Item

Donatella Versace’s lighter
case

“The ability to make fire has always been a sign of human ingenuity. In Greek mythology, fire is what the intelligent Prometheus stole from Zeus and gave to mortals. This lighter, covered in white Swarovski crystals and bearing the Versace Medusa-head motif in gold – a reference to another Greek myth – is a portable fire-maker and that is why I have chosen it for the time capsule. It’s both useful and symbolic of the human spirit.” View Item

Luis Venegas’s old issue
of Harper’s Bazaar

“I think it’s funny to celebrate the anniversary of a magazine by submitting a copy of a different one. I grew up looking at printed magazines, dreaming about other worlds throughout their pages. So, years later I became an editor and magazine collector. In my opinion, nothing can beat the magical power of printed publications – you can go back to the past and create your own fantasy. This specific issue of American Harper’s Bazaar was published years before I was even born... Barbra Streisand is gracing the cover and pages inside.” View Item

Katie Shillingford’s wig

“While working at Dazed, I’ve dyed my hair pretty much every colour in the rainbow. I commissioned the amazing Alex Brownsell to dye this blue wig for Mia Wasikowska, the star of ‘Alice in Wonderland’, to wear on the March 2010 cover. I’ve since worn the wig to a Dazed Christmas party when I went dressed as the Virgin Mary. I know I’m not the first to have dyed my hair but it makes me happy.” View Item

Vivienne Westwood’s bag

“Happy anniversary, Dazed & Confused. I have chosen this bag for Dazed’s time capsule to raise awareness about the Ethical Africa Programme. Simone Cipriani, head of the International Trade Centre for Poor Communities and Trade, came to me with this idea to use fashion as a means to get out of poverty. This project gives people control over their lives, it makes them independent. It’s quite incredible to think that one day we might be able to save the world through fashion.” View Item

Cathy Edward’s photograph

“I think this was my first real cover for Dazed. Delphine was the model of the moment and I think it was the end of the 90s. We dyed Delphine’s hair different pastel shades for the shoot and I remember thinking that we were doing a look that no one else was doing.” View Item

Hussein Chalayan’s book

“I wanted to make a more personal publication which shares more processes than most books, giving the reader an insight into my world for the past year, but also describes the evolution of the Chalayan brand.” View Item

Jefferson Hack’s Andy
Warhol’s Index (Book)

“‘Andy Warhol’s Index (Book)’ for the imagination, a talisman, a collectable countercultural artefact, an art book as an interactive manifesto. It has followed me around for the last 20 years as one of my first art book purchases and it continues to be one of my favourite small treasures.” View Item

Alex Box’s book

“When I look back through the book it feels immensely personal, I can see the mood shifts, feelings and emotions I went through in that time frame – I feel distilled in the pages! As well as the original colour cover, this limited-edition black cover (of which there are only 100) was made. The image is one of my favourite works I have made.” View Item
