Emmaus is a non-religeous world-wide charity that sets up small self-sufficient communities in areas that suffer from different types of poverty. It could be homelessness in the developed world, to extreme poverty and lack of medical care and clean water in the developing world. The underlying theme is 'self-sufficiency, self support and self respect'. Most of the communities achieve this by recycling and reselling other peoples unwanted and donated goods and furniture in emmaus shops ran by Companions. Everyone that lives and works in an emmaus community is called a Companion and is paid a small allowance. Companion is a term of respect and solidarity in a world that has often ignored these people in the past. Our st.albans community also offers the support and care needed to conquer a lot of the social exclusion and personal issues that have lead to homelessness, from severe addictions and bereavement to failing mental health and the downright bad luck that could affect us all. We help to provide certificated workskills, college courses for reading and writing, charity work in the wider community, counselling and a hand to move on to a more satisfying and productive life with a sense of pride in all of our achievements. The companions live and work together with the understanding that everyone is equal and will work to the best of their abilities. We bear the load from van driving to cooking for 25 people, repairing and restoring furniture, running our two shops to running ebay. It works well and with your help we'll be able to achieve total self-sufficiency this year, the first time since we opened the st.albans emmaus seven years ago! Thanks to all those that have supported us, from our volunteers and donors to our loyal customers that have helped us get this far, you know who you are.
