 ABOUT THE ARTIST Joanne was born in Yorkshire and educated in Shropshire. She then moved to Essex, where she became professionally qualified as a graphic designer, beginning her working life as a freelance illustrator. She then spent several years working in London as an art editor, designing magazines for the B.B.C, Haymarket ans also the very first Big Issue. She later moved to a picturesque Essex village where she re-established her love for drawing and painting. It was at a local craft fair that she discovered the art of pyrography and soon found that she had a talent for this medium. Her shop has some loving detailed items for sale. She also accepts commissions and will happily design pieces personal to you. WHAT IS PYROGRAPHY? Pyrography - from the Greek meaning 'fire writing' - is an ancient and unusual art. The effect is produced by burning the surfaces of a wood panel to various depths of brown. It gives a similar impression to that of pen and ink drawing, but is capable of additional subtle and beautiful effects. The secret is light even pressure combined with even speed of stroke. Any hesitation will result in a blob. The depth of colour depends on the length of time that the point is in contact with the wood. Pressure has very little to do with it. The wood surface should be prepared without any polish and sanded perfectly smooth. Birch, sycamore, holly and boxwood are ideal woods. Peculiarities of grain can often be used as part of the composition. The completed work should then be sealed to keep out the dirt, with a good varnish. Pyrographs should not be exposed to direct sunlight or the lightly burned parts will fade. Why not take a look at my website for that unique gift or even a personal treat!
