An Islamic perspective of the Pen

There is a sura (chapter) in the Holy Quran, chapter 69 called Al-Qalam, or the Pen, or Nun.

The Pen is the symbol of the permanent Record, The written Decree, the perfect Order In the government of the world, and by that token the Man of God comes with a Plan And Guidence that must against All detraction. Truth is high above Slander. But man must be tried against selfishness and overweening confidence in themselves Such as would lead them to forget God and his providence, like the brothers who build castles in the air about their garden and found it desolate in one nights storm. But repentance brought them forgiveness: thus work the Warth and the Mercy of God.

Islamic Scholars have described the role of The Pen as based on the Holy Quran and the traditions or sayings of the Last Prophet, Prophet Muhammad,on whom be peace, as follows:

Allah (God Almighty) commanded the Pen, Write!! and the Pen asked, "what shall I write", write all that I command. And so, the pen started to write all that was commanded on the preserved tablet (the permanent record) that hangs from the Throne Of Allah.

Another Chapter inn the Qur'an with reference to THE PEN

96. Surah Al-Alaq (The Clot)

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

1. Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists),

2. Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).

3. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,

4. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen [the first person to write was Prophet Idrees (Enoch)],

5. Has taught man that which he knew not.

6. Nay! Verily, man does transgress all bounds (in disbelief and evil deed, etc.).

7. Because he considers himself self-sufficient.

8. Surely! Unto your Lord is the return.

9. Have you (O Muhammad ()) seen him (i.e. Abu Jahl) who prevents,

10. A slave (Muhammad ()) when he prays?

11. Tell me, if he (Muhammad ()) is on the guidance (of Allah)?

12. Or enjoins piety?

13. Tell me if he (the disbeliever, Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Qur'an), and turns away?

14. Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)?

15. Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock,

16. A lying, sinful forelock!

17. Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers),

18. We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)!

19. Nay! (O Muhammad ())! Do not obey him (Abu Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allah!

... Did you know that.....

The modern fountain pen was invented for the Sultan of Egypt in 953 after he demanded a pen which would not stain his hands or clothes. It held ink in a reservoir and, as with modern pens, fed ink to the nib by a combination of gravity and capillary action.

My Story....

My story, about my love of fountain pens started during my high school days. My father, who was an Accountant, was very particular about his handwriting and figure work and always used a fountain pen, I watched how he looked after his pens, saw him fill the ink and always had the ones he used at hand. Parkers were his favorite, but always to expensive for me, so I ended up using the cheaper ones.

Than it happened, one day I went into a shop that sold many items, all made in the peoples republic of China, there on the shelf, I spotted some writing instuments, at first I thought they were parkers, but upon close examination thery were not, infact they were called HERO, this was inscribed on the gleming golden cap. I bought two pens, went home and asked my father if I could have some ink, He asked me why I wanted ink, I said I wanted ink for my new fountain pens, I showed him the ones I had bought, he looked at them and asked me to fetch some ink. He inked both pens and said, let me try one as well. After a few days, I asked him about the pens and I discovered that he had bought a dozen, infact he was already hooked, after that I always saw him using the Hero fountain pen.
