As a child I always had a fascination, bordering on an obsession with cars - I wasn't really interested in other toys. by the age of 9 I had started collecting brochures as they were donated by friends of my parents who knew of my interest. In 1975 I was taken to the Northern Motorshow in Leeds and came back with a pile of brochures. My parents suggested that if I wrote to the manufacturers and asked them nicely they might send me more – and indeed they were extremely generous in doing so. Soon all my pocket money went on buying stamps, I found a copy of "World Cars" in my local Library which provided addresses of overseas manufacturers who I hounded as well. In 1976 I tried to get a copy of a brochure for every car in production in the world, and I probably succeeded in getting 90% of them. I carried on like this for a couple of years and then as I got involved in sports and other things my interest waned . Particularly when I was finally old enough to drive, and within a few months had my first car (a '75 Opel Kadett - I loved that car). I still picked up brochures at showrooms, it was easier to get them now I could pose as a buyer, and the Motorshows always brought rich pickings. A friend in the motor trade at a Volvo dealer, and later on VW/Audi used to give me large amounts of brochures.
In the 26 years I’ve been driving I reckon I’ve covered half a million miles in 24 cars, but that doesn’t mean a different car every year. I did some kerb-side car trading for a while but I wasn’t good enough at it to be worth the bother. I’m sad to say that I’ve never owned an exciting car. I’ve covered the last 150,000 miles in VTEC Civics and we currently own a Civic 1.5 VTEC and a Mitsubishi Lancer Estate. The weirdest cars I’ve owned are a Daihatsu F20 when I worked in the middle east and a ’72 Lancia Berlina with a lovely flat 4 engine and net curtains in the rear window !
I never started this collection to make money, although I did imagine that one day the Ferrari brochures would be worth something. I now know If I’d collected more Truck and Tractor brochures I might be richer !
Why am I selling them all? Well Mrs Atticfull pointed out sometime ago that all the brochures, plus hundreds of magazines were never looked at , but were causing cracks in the ceiling. I had to agree, and with a young family they would better off converted to cash which the wonderful medium of E-bay is allowing me to do.
To those that have occasionally requested to see my collection, please don’t imagine I have a museum – it’s just a rather inaccessible pile of boxes. E-bay is a profitable hobby - I actually work in the Aircraft Industry.
My best wishes go to all my customers, money aside, I like the thought that somebody will continue to get pleasure my collection. Ten years ago - as I ruptured myself once again moving the collection to yet another house I had seriously thought of binning it !
