Something About Us.
The idea of The Literary Cat was initially coined by Pieter some years ago, while he was studying for his Masters Degree at Leiden University, Holland. The idea continued to inspire him through the years he spent working as an antiquarian book specialist, cataloguer and assistant auctioneer at one of Holland's oldest auction houses in The Hague and through his own private passion for amassing a substantial collection of historic antiquarian books.
By the time Pieter had met Emma, whose education and natural inclination leaned towards history, fine bindings, the art of bookbinding, prints, limited editions and private presses, it seemed obvious that they should combine all these facets in a new business…and get married too!
Pieter moved to Britain and the seed of Literary Cat Books quietly germinated into a fully fledged business.
Literary Cat Books, now established and increasing in size for a number of years has added this New Book website to its fold. This enables us to not only maintain our primary priority for excellent customer service, it also provides our avid readership with a wider selection of new and exciting books.
Apart from the countless hours of help and support given by family and friends, at the heart of this continued success are our growing band of loyal return customers.
Thank you everyone and just keep reading!
The real Literary Cat.....
In July 2006 a malnourished, small stray cat stumbled into the Thomas Parry Library at Aberystwyth University and began devouring a box of jam doughnuts. As Pieter sat there eating his typical dutch lunch of kipper salad, the little stray cat's nose twitched...not at the sight of a tall hungry Dutchman, but from the aroma of delicious fish. Needless to say, over the following several days and many kipper salads later, they became firm friends and it was decided that the little library cat should come home and take on a new role as the Literary Cat.
After a fraught car journey involving an escaped, highly active cat and a home where the first meal consisted of tuna and worm tablets, rounded off with a bright sparkling red flea collar, the little cat soon not only grew in size, but also in confidence and book knowledge. Very quickly the uncanny ability to locate and sit upon the particular volume anyone wanted to read was noted. With such animal sense, cute looks and typical cat-like human manipulation, it was easy to see that Tom Tom (named after the Thomas Parry Library) was slowly becoming not only a mascot and pet but also secretly, the boss! ;)
The Two New Editions...excuse the pun!
Well, in the beginning of March 2008 we added to our Literary Cat with the addition of two more felines.
Firstly, a rescued 9 month feral ginger tom by the name of Hemmingway, aka "The Silent Assassin"; known for his solely nocturnal habitations of eating everyones food and literally hiding out in a still, as yet, unlocated secret place within the hours of daylight!
Two days later, as if this little chap was not enough, fate brought our way the most delightful 10 month old tabby, now known as Juno; aka "More Attention Please"; Completely the opposite to Hemmingway, Juno is seen everywhere, by everyone at all times. She loves nothing more than talking and stalking any human who she comes across in here daily routine of pamper prowling.
Tom Tom is adjusting very well to these minions, sorry, new additions and with everyone visiting the local vet this week for vaccinations and boosters, they should all be in fine fettle for lots of book reviews and outdoor sun when the good weather finally arrives.
Where you can Find The Literary Cat.
Of course, you may have now discovered us online with our two websites and hopefully bookmarked them for new and exciting updates:
www.literarycatbooks.com – For New Books & Pre-Publication Offers
And
www.literarycatbooks.net – For Antiquarian, Rare, Second Hand & Out-of-Print Books
You can also visit us in Hay-on-Wye, Herefordshire.
Our book unit is set in Broadstreet Books, the only collective bookshop in the world's oldest booktown Hay-on-Wye, host to the world-renowned Hay Literary Festival, and an independent kingdom in its own right. You may have seen Hay without realizing, as its clocktower and the surrounding countryside is featured in the opening credits of the BBC's Antiques Roadshow. Hay is home to an eclectic variety of people drawn from across the world, with one love in common ... Books. There are many excellent bookshops to visit, not least of which is Broad Street Books, which is the first bookshop on the right you encounter after crossing the bridge and entering Hay. In this unit we specialize in rare, antiquarian and collectible books, along with fine bindings and limited editions. Come for a day, but spend a week in beautiful Hay. Should you be in Hay for the Festival, we can heartily recommend Herdman Coaches as one of the friendliest and most helpful taxi and coach services in the entire area.
Castle Square & The Buttercross, Ludlow, Shropshire.
In stunning view of Ludlow's impressive medieval castle you can come and view a selection of our new books, along with a number of antique prints, maps and postcards every Saturday & Monday in the town's historic Castle Square. This long established traditional market has been held since the 12th century and after some 900 years still is one of the most popular drop-off points for the town's locals and visitors alike. As A. E. Housman said in A Shropshire Lad "Or come you home of Monday, When Ludlow Market hums."
- Photo from www.ludlow.org.uk -
There are over 500 listed buildings in the town of Ludlow itself and on Sundays we move to the top of Broad Street, which has been described as the most beautiful street in Britain and position ourselves inside the architectural gem that is the Buttercross. With more access to space in this wonderfully atmospheric building, we are able to display a larger selection of new and collectible books, antique prints, postcards, stamps and maps. Please pop in as say hello if ever you are in the area as bibliophiles are always most welcome!
Please be aware that all our catalogues are constantly updated and new stock is always available, so please do not hesitate to bookmark our site and browse it regularly.
