80% of world blindness is avoidable. Nearly 45 million people worldwide are blind, 36 million simply do not need to be. 90% of them live in developing countries. In the time that it has taken you to read this, one more person somewhere in the world will have lost their sight. ORBIS exists to preserve and restore sight worldwide. We work in partnership with local health professionals to improve the quality of eye care available for people in countries where the need is great. .The scale of the challenge is enormous. A cure is often simple and inexpensive, but in the world’s poorest countries even the most basic medical help is often out of reach for those who need it the most .There may be only one ophthalmologist for every million people. Blindness or poor vision can mean never going to school, never marrying, always feeling as if you’re a burden to others. Inspired by this overwhelming need, we launched ORBIS and our unique Flying Eye Hospital in 1982. Twenty-two years later, our highly skilled volunteer medical staff have trained over 63,000 local medical professionals who have gone on to share their new skills with others to give 17.5 million people back their sight and their future. |
