Coin Grading System

The grading of coins is quite often just a personal opinion. I try to be as fair as possible when grading any coins I
sell and if necessarily err on the side of caution. Photographs or scans can be a good indicator as to the condition
of a coin and I always take the best possible shots I can, however, I'm not a professional photographer. I list below
a chart of UK coin grades, and their description, that I currently use.

Abbreviation
Used

Coin Grade
Description
FDC Fleur-de-Coin Absolutely flawless, without any wear scratches or fingerprints. Mainly used for proof coins.
BUNC Brilliant Uncirculated A coin, with full mint lustre, that has never been in general circulation and is as issued by the mint. However it may have some bag marks.
UNC Uncirculated

In new condition as issued by the mint and has never been in general circulation. It may not necessarily be perfect and could have toning and/or bag marks.

EF Extremely Fine

A coin that at first glance might appear to be uncirculated but on closer examination, will reveal slight surface marks and/or wear to the highest points.

VF Very Fine A coin that shows some noticeable wear to the highest points but design and legend (inscription on coin) will be very clearly defined.
F Fine A coin that has its highest point considerably worn but design is still clearly defined. The legend shows wear but is readable.
FR Fair A coin with all areas extensively worn and the design is no longer necessarily defined. All inscriptions and main features should still be distinguishable.
P Poor

A coin which is so extremely worn that its features are only just discernible.

G Good From time to time I also use G in front of the normal abbreviations used with the above terms. For example GF 'Good Fine' means better than 'Fine' but not quite 'Very Fine'
A About / Almost Also I use 'A', almost or about, to mean not quite as good as. For example AF means 'almost Fine', which is better than 'Fair' but not quite 'Fine'.
