VIST MY SITE
WHAT I DO
for MANY YEARS I have designed TUBE audiophile equipment, guitar amps and effects, and modified vintage recording equipment, and upgraded new recording equipment with military grade parts, custom wound transformers, and higher grade op amps, etc..
I have the worlds largest library of schematics, and have personally made well over 1000 audiophile tube amps, preamps, headphone amps, etc. as well as similar numbers of mic preamps, eq units.
I personally OWN original equipment from OLYMPIC studios,( Jimi Hendrix, the BEATLES, Queen, etc)
and MOTOWN ( the actual channels Marvin Gaye sang "lets get it ON" through,
the RCA mobile #1 unit from ABC radio in new york, console channels from Warner brothers, Columbia, and the MGM grand...
and various other vintage studio equipment that i restore, modify for use in my studio ( STUDIOJELLYFISH )
and for people like you.
WHY I DO IT
I LOVE THE IDEA that IN PARALLEL WITH the
ALL-ENCOMPASSING-MEGA-CORPERATE MERGING-OF-EVERYTHING,
in which your PC , Cable-media, Print-media,
TV-media, Radio-media,
Credit card, phone company, bank, hydro and Product manufacture
is all gluppping together under one corperate
world-view re-enforcing UBER ENTERPRISE
there is NOW the separately evolving INDEPENDANT MUSICIAN and HOME RECORDING , HOME MANUFACTURE and DESIGN reality..
where you can actually support the artist you are interested in DIRECTLY by buying thier music/art/whatever, and by finding them on the web.
This can ALSO apply to buying your
studio equipment DIRECTLY
from people who can deliver the goods
without MIDDLE MANAGEMENT,
ADVERTIZING BUDGETS, and other
HIGH OVERHEAD EXPENSES.
"Empowering" those folks is in
large part what i am about..
i dont, for example, know any musicians
among my friends, who can afford 30,000 for a Fairchild compressor,or $9,000 for a pair of neve mic pre/eq channels..
mostly, they dont have INSTRUMENTS which cost this mucH.
they ARE, or should be, more concerned with buying a HOME.
high end discrete equipment is usually rediculously expensive, usually comes with little or NO documentation, and a disturbing number of vintage equipment "guru" types and resellers dont bother to actually bring the gear to decent working order, let alone knowing how to
customize things on a design or parts level.
this is the problem you face,
EVERYONE in the game will tell you
thier gear is the best,
and its what YOU NEED.
HOW do you tell true from untrue?
thats a tough one, reputations
are often manufactured.
the TRADE MAGAZINE REVIEWS =
PAID ADVERTISING = FAVOURABLE REVIEWS
ever notice how they
pretty much like EVERYTHING?
ever tried to get , for example,
the company who designs
your equipment to TELL YOU
WHAT IS UNDER THE HOOD,
what theANALOG STAGES ARE,
whether chip or discrete,
what kind of coupling devices they use?
GOOD LUCK. you need to GET INSIDE
the units, or see the
SCHEMATICS to find this stuff out.
THATS Why people find me, i
have the schematics for most
gear, historical or modern.
its at LEAST a starting point.
Vintage equipment was, by and large,
hand built, discrete, transformer coupled
made for studio's when real engineers
were available to design
and maintain it.
the best of it was made
military grade,
and some brands you may not know!
are capable of AMAZING performance..
i have been working on QUAD 8, and others.
little known outside
the industry veterans..
but they can outperform NEVE,
( as EQ / preamp strips)
and was used by WARNER BROTHERS, MOTOWN,
CAPITOL Records, the MGM GRAND, etc etc..
with NEVE mic pre, and eq channels
fetching $4500 EACH!
things like QUAD8 are the logical choice,
if they can be modded less expensively
than building equivelent units from SCRATCH,
if they can be made
to serve the functional requirements of modern studios.
( for example, most big film studios used quad8, and stereo
wasnt a big deal..so though you have wonderfull high headroom
high voltage discrete circuits, you dont have a PAN control,
one of the reasons you dont see as many of them in vintage
MUSIC studios..but as front end for modern computer setups,
you arent mixing externally anyway, what you want is the
great mic preamps, and EQ, resplendant with REAL jensen grade
transformers, inductors, and high voltage rails.
by adding high grade power supply caps, high slew rate
polypropaline couplers, and simplifying the signal path,
you get amazing performance for a price rivalling the
raw PARTS cost to recreate these units, and have some
incredable history to draw on as well.
there are other brands like this, ( did you know that TRIDENT
has twice the headroom of neve, and that the B range modules
are almost IDENTICAL in circuitry to the outrageously priced A range?
did you know that ALL TELEFUNKEN are NOT THE SAME, there are substantial differances in TRANSFORMER types which make a HUGE differance in fidelity?
do you know WHICH vintage gear uses what, in terms of transformers,
and how they all actually COMPARE? Need a source for high end custom wound transformers at a WAY lower price than the equivelent and
NO LONGER PRODUCED UTC LINEAR STANDARD transformers? )
THATS WHERE I COME IN.
