All that changed during 2004 when I became very ill very rapidly. Soon I was barely able to climb the stairs or get out of bed: I was suffering from chronic heart failure, making me breathless and tired - I was wasting away. I spent most of this time in hospital. For my wife, two young children and my family this was a very difficult time. Not too easy for me either! I was dying. Every time I said goodbye to my loved ones, I never knew if I would see them again. Just before Christmas 2004 I was told that I would need a heart transplant. By then I was so ill that I welcomed the news. The next critical step was when I was sent to Papworth Hospital for a battery of tests to assess whether I was fit enough for a transplant. Some patients with heart failure can already be too ill to have a transplant, or their organs are already too damaged for them to survive transplantation. For these poor people, there is no hope. So you can imagine my relief when, after 3 days, I was told that yes, I was an ideal candidate for a heart transplant, and that I would immediately go on the waiting list. I never thought I would be so pleased to be told I was going to have a heart transplant :-). Then there came the wait for a suitable donor heart to become availble. Due to the shortage of donors, many patients die waiting. After one false alarm when I was called in to Papworth for a transplant only to be told that the organ was not suitable, a suitable donor heart was found after a wait of just two weeks. Mercifully brief, it was still the longest two weeks of my life! Within 3 weeks of the transplant I was back home with my family. The transplant itself was relatively painless. Unless I laughed, coughed or moved ;-). On my first day home I was able to go for a walk with my family and my dog in the New Forest. I was already on the road to recovery. As I write this it is now a year since my transplant, life still feels fresh and new. I feel great, and am fitter than I have been for years. I am SO lucky. Every year hundreds of people die while waiting for transplants. There is a chronic shortage of organ donors in the United Kingdom. For the unlucky ones, life is one long goodbye. For the lucky ones, some immensely kind person who they will never know has saved their life. I can never thank my donor, or their families who gave their consent at such a difficult time. To receive this Gift of Life is a deeply humbling experience that truely reawakens your appreciation of what 'humanity' means. Please consider registering as an organ donor.
