Brian Page interest in
Japanese and Chinese Art goes back many decades. As a teenager he found a set of
lacquer chop sticks in a junk shop run by his aunt in Amberley in Sussex.
The set cost one shilling (now 5 pence). He was so fascinated by the
lacquer that the following day he bought a book on Japanese Art which started a
lifetime obsession. Although active as a collector it was not until 1968
that he decided to devote himself full-time to the business of being an Asian
Art dealer.
His
first shop was in Lewes, Sussex where he was soon joined by his brother Colin
who later became one of the UK most respected Antiquarian Book Dealers. The
business was called Kokoro, a Japanese word meaning heart, mind and soul. The
business later moved to a premises in the centre of Brighton where Brian had the
lower floor and Colin the upper floor. As the brothers soon outgrew the
available space Brian moved out and Colin stayed on at the shop which still
trades today as Colin Page Antiquarian Books, Colin having retired in 2000.
Brian
next venture was a partnership with his old friend, the Somerset dealer, David
Hawkes (edo11
on eBay) . They opened a large shop in Brighton under the name Page
& Hawkes. This business specialised in Japanese Antiques and Arts &
Crafts, Art Nouveau and Austrian Secessionist furniture. David Hawkes ran their
warehouse and restoration workshop in what had been the Victorian Railway Engine
House at Templecombe Station in Somerset. During this period Page & Hawkes
were the main suppliers of Arts & Crafts furniture to Messrs Liberty of
Regent Street, London. Also at this time Brian was making regular trips to Japan
on buying trips and filling containers with Japanese antiques.
