In 1920, 20 year old Harold C Humphreys, who had left school at the age of 13, started a small workshop in Wilmslow, Cheshire. His main business was stringing tennis rackets, but he soon moved into the sportswear business.
In 1924 “Humphrey Brothers” was formed and an eighteen foot warehouse was rented next to Wilmslow’s Cobblers Shop. 1925 was a boom year for Humphrey Brothers. The British Government ordered P.T. shirts for the armed forces and staff rose to 50. In 1927, the company started its export business and by 1930 home and overseas sales had increased by so much that 10,000 square feet of warehouse space was taken in Water Lane, Wilmslow.
In the next seven years business prospered so much, across a wide range of sportswear, that a new factory was opened in Macclesfield.
Wartime meant a switch from sportswear to army clothing and internal fittings for Lancaster bombers. The return of peacetime production was celebrated with the opening of a factory in Stockport. It was now that the company capitalised on the exposure the UMBRO brand (Humphrey Brothers) had received just prior to the war when, first, Manchester City wore UMBRO shirts in the 1934 FA Cup final and then Sheffield Wednesday in 1935 – both winning the coveted silver trophy.
UMBRO have, over the years, also enjoyed long and harmonious relationships with some of the greatest British clubs and teams.
During the early 1960’s Tottenham Hotspur became the first club this century to win the FA Cup and First Division Championship double. Blanchflower, Jones and Mackay all wore UMBRO. The great teams built by Shankly and Paisley at Liverpool also donned UMBRO jerseys on many championship winning occasions, including all their European Cup victories.
British giants Celtic and Manchester United have also worn the UMBRO badge with pride whilst winning football’s greatest competitions. Glasgow Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup when Tommy Gemmell drilled home their winner to defeat Inter Milan in 1965. The following year the famous Busby Babes repeated this feat and became the first English team to win the trophy. Manchester United have also won the Treble in 1999 wearing UMBRO.
Internationally UMBRO has become synonymous with success. In 1966 Geoff Hurst wore the classic red England Away jersey whilst scoring his famous hat-trick against Germany beneath Wembley's twin towers. Incredibly fifteen out of the sixteen teams in the Finals wore UMBRO kit.
Brazil have won the world cup four times wearing UMBRO. After winning the competition in 1958 and 1962 Brazil retained the Jules Rimet trophy in 1970 in Mexico City. In 1994 Brazil repeated this success in America beating Italy in a penalty shoot out. Pele, Jairzinho, Rivalinho, Rivaldo, Ronaldo – great names, great players have all worn UMBRO.
Performance Footwear
In 1985 UMBRO introduced its first football boot in Brazil. Since then some of the world's greatest players have worn UMBRO boots including Alan Shearer and Michael Owen.
2001 was a great year for Michael Owen and UMBRO as the revolutionary new XAI boot was launched and Michael won the European player of the year – Ballon D’or. In 2003 Owen scored his 100th premiership goal and Alan Shearer was voted Premiership player of the Decade.
Both Michael and Alan are proud ambassadors for the brand today. The new Elite X UMBRO Football boot is also worn by many other great players including John Terry, David James, Deco, Michel Salgado, Louis Garcia and Anders Svensson.
